Personality
Shaman came into the world full of salt and vinegar. As a baby, he was a long-legged handful, pinning his ears and threatening to nip every chance he got. As soon as you went to chastise him, he'd bolt to Mom and peer under her belly, the innocent little baby once again. He grew up into a little spitfire. frequently testing Malcolm's patience when it came to his training. His tail was a proverbial whip when Mal would mount him in the round pen, lashing at his trainer as much as possible. Gradually, the colt grew out of his irritable tendency, becoming more of a full fledged brat, but at least a more mannerly one. Not a lover of anything grooming related, Shaman must be cross-tied if he's to stand still. His skin twitches compulsively as if he is constantly being abused by a swarm of flies and he'll pin his ears at the sight of a hard brush. Often times, just a microfiber cloth will do the trick as he isn't prone to getting very dirty. A wimp when it comes to rain, the colt would rather hide in the shed than come in for grain if it's so much as sprinkling.
On rainy race days, Shaman's tail is pulled into a polo pony braid and tied up because just the feel of the sopping wet hair will permanently turn him off. As reluctant as he is to be in the rain, he's quite the mudder. It's almost as though he thinks that if he just runs a little faster, the humans will let him out of the rain that much quicker. Due to the fact that he is a lighter framed colt than most, Shaman skips over sloppy ground and soggy turf as if he were gliding over water. He's a flash out of the gate and will instantly head for the lead. As finicky as he is on the ground, he's a pure professional during a race. If his rider asks him to back off in the face of quicker competition, he will do so, but he must always maintain a clear view. Shaman is the first horse to freak if someone cuts in front of him and will pull himself up out of the race. More often than not, Shaman is a quick son of a gun and doesn't allow this to happen. He'll cruise through impressive fractions and give the appearance that he would be able to run for miles if allowed. Shaman has a swift turn of foot down the lane, really sticking it to both the front runners and the closers. To make matters worse, if they do catch him in the shadow of the wire, they'll have to fight to get by him as he is anything if not fiercely determined. |
