Gunner is sometimes almost too intelligent for his own good. He has an annoying habit of just being overly observant and for a time we thought that was going to be a major detriment and distraction, especially for a thoroughbred racehorse at a busy track, but he has proven us wrong. He doesn't get distracted, he is like a laser with his focus and every detail that he takes in is to further his goals and ambitions. Gunner is a tactician, no doubt about it. He's always thinking ahead and that can often make him the devil to train and make work because if it isn't in hi agenda, you can have some serious pushback, but it isn't extravagant. He minds his manners for the most part because more often than not his goals have aligned with his human counterparts and that is to have speed and more speed in his life.
He is a thinker with speed and come race day he is as in his element as a fish in water. He is the kind that likes to get right down to business and can get snappish come race day when he deems that things are taking too long. Our best method for keeping him in hand when he gets riled up is to just keep his mind occupied, be that with treats, toys and yes...even braiding his hair. He finds the action of us playing with his hair to be a comfort and we don't have the heart to tell him that he looks precious (what he doesn't know won't hurt him). Once things get moving, Gunner's head is in a much better place. Once that forward motion gets rolling, he's completely on the muscle and ready to rumble. He like to break out of the gates without distraction and will gun to settle right behind the leaders. Once there, to him is where all of his cunning and speed come into the play. He isn't easily pressured from behind, but finds immense pleasure in putting it onto others. He has the cunning to know when to push, when to back off, when to wait and when to go for the jugular. He's a tactician armed with speed and when his moment comes to challenge for the win, he will take it without hesitation and give it his all until all is said and done. He's got a heart of gold with a desire to please and a need to win.
