There is no horse more physically capable of being bad than Cold Mountain. The big black colt uses his size and strength to its biggest advantage... breaking the rules. He is a challenging horse to work with, violent and demonstrative. He paws and snorts, his eyes will rim with red and he will charge his stall door if anyone passes close by. He isn't loud by any means and not generally violent towards other horses around him which definitely works in favor for the staff. Captain is physically overpowering and he knows it. He's hard to handle out of the stall, dragging his groom about the barn and certainly picking fights. The colt is unusually protective of the barn's youngsters. Anyone who touches them will receive hate filled glares and a thunderous black colt attempting to break his stall down in order to get to the declared enemy. Captain is put in a paddock where he has full view of the youngsters and he will often be seen parading the fence lines as if he were on guard. He tears his paddock up trying to get to the visitor and often, as the maintenance people are out twice a week cleaning up his muddy messes. Captain loves to roll in the mud and will coat himself until he is a solid brown animal rather than the jet black horse that he normally is. Captain is a gorgeous colt and will become fantastically built as he ages. However, The stable are dying to learn how to control the massive horse before he also ages into the fits of a stallion.
Not surprisingly, Captain is a tough nut on the track. His favorite part of course is the running and any section before that is just a waste of time. The powerful colt cannot handle the nearness of people and other horses. He likes to do his own thing on the track and the racing officials recognize it. They do not want a 17 hand monster having a meltdown in front of a whole crowd of people. He doesn't do any warm up on the track, just walks and trots and watches with that one blue eye as the other horses do their gallops.Captain will load patiently, but more than a few times he'll attempt to savage the starter holding his head. He breaks quite well and will run up to take the lead. He is only hard to handle when the rider has a tight rein or uses a whip on him. His jockey never touches the colt, not with her hands or crop. The black horse doesn't need any encouragement. He can be hard to handle if another horse runs up to him, but then he'll settle back into that massive stride of his and relax right into his jockey's hands. Because he is so relaxed on the lead, Captain can attempt to steal the race, however, he finds it more fun to put a little drama into the race He'll let a few horses run up to him in the head of the stretch and then decide it's time to become the roaring, wild tornado. The black colt will push off with all his might and then re-break as if it weren't hard enough to sprint already. He has a will to win that is not often matched and talent that is provided for by his massive frame. Captain is a tough cookie, but he'll give you everything he has until he races beneath that wire.
History:
Cold Mountain was purchased by Ripley Marsh from Dreamvalley Stables when they were still up and running. The colt ran most of his Year Twelve season with Witch Creek and was turning his record around at the time of his sale. He went to In Stride Racing for the early half of Year Thirteen, but then was bought back due to inactivity. The stallion was gelded upon his return and he managed to win one race before it was decided to retire him. The big guy simply was falling prey to tendon ligaments and it was decided to retire him sound and prepare him for another career as a dressage horse.
