Brooks and Maggie looked over the pair of horses standing before them with searching eyes. Bella Luna and GS Royal Crown were on opposite ends of the spectrum currently in their two year old seasons. Bella Luna, much like Frozen Motion, had had a very consistent season so far in Year Twelve. She had not made a start since the Magic Millions Fillies Turf in April Week Four at Green Horse Fields. She still only had one win to her name, but she had done extremely well. She was making a return off of a two month lay off and would make her first start since that April race in June Week Four. She looked brilliant standing at the edge of the turf track. Her 15.3 hand body glimmered like a moonstone in the bright sun. She was almost blinding to look at. She pranced to the side in an attempt to edge away from the humans' attention. She didn't like being in the spotlight so much if it wasn't accompanied by pats and strokes. Brooks drew her closer, smiling when she suddenly dropped her head and placed it against his chest. The Sea Struck filly was really such a charmer.
Now GS Royal Crown on the other hand was quite the opposite. The steel gray stud reared at the end of the shank, pawing at the air, ears pinned back to his head. Maggie let the colt go up, admiring his form. GS Royal Crown was an up and coming star in the two year old turf ranks. So far Blue Me Away led the ranks by a mile, but a horse with two back to back wins was nothing to sneeze at. Crow was just on the edge of leaping into grade four in just his fourth start with Witch Creek. Maggie couldn't be more pleased with her very own horse. Maybe not in this particular moment in time, but she was pleased in general. She yelled up at the Seabiscuit son and swung the lead shank. The gray came back to earth with a very aggravated thud. Brooks shook his head at the temperamental colt, pleased that his filly was so simple-minded and content with her life. Maggie then went up to Crow's head and stroked the lighter center of his steely face. The colt let out an exasperated sigh through his delicate nostrils. All was fine with the world.
We're going to have a good ride today aren't we, my temperamental boy? The colt bobbed as head and licked his lips. Even Brooks had to smile. GS Royal Crown was the typical pain in the butt that every top race barn had. However, he made it worth while when he streaked away to victory. Brooks wanted something similar to happen for Bella Luna. That near white filly deserved a win. She had faced off with the best and come out third. Surely she could handle the competition she would have to face in the next coming months. Bella Luna deserved a proper win and Brooks was going to get it for her one way or another. He patted the filly's powerful neck and swung aboard. Maggie also artfully leaped onto Crow's back. The horse began to paw studdishly at the earth beneath him, tossing his long black mane about. Always the show off. Bella Luna, however, was less than impressed.
She trotted right out from beneath Brooks, head high in the air, tail flowing out behind her. Lulu was a smart filly and she loved working. She'd enjoyed getting back to her morning gallops and would definitely take this planned workout into stride. She loved and accepted change. She loved being challenged and especially loved to please Brooks. Her ears remained pinned on her man up until they stepped out onto the turf track. Instantly, she perked up and began to lurch forward, knees lifted. Brooks grinned. The clever filly clearly had not forgotten what it was like to workout over the track with another horse. When she galloped in the morning, Lulu was always galloped alone. Because GS Royal Crown was accompanying her today, Lulu knew what was about to happen. Her chocolate eyes swung over the horse prancing beside her, their depths glittering now with a competitive light.
Crow was rather moody today. The dramatic two year old leaped about, tossing his head, pinning his ears and then suddenly bolting forward, nearly ramming straight into Lulu. The well-formed filly pinned her ears and threatened to kick out. Maggie rapidly pulled her steel colored colt away and then pointed him up the hill. These guys want to go. Might as well indulge them. Brooks nodded and allowed Lulu to step out into a lovely canter. She bowed her neck and looked like a horse for a king. Brooks stood calmly in the saddle. Bella Luna was such a good horse. She deserved everything that was good in the world. He wanted to give her it. He looked to his right and nodded. Crow was cantering smoothly, but looked as though he were moving faster than usual. Maggie was right the horse was full of energy, but at least the bad energy always vanished when he was working or had to think.
Ripley wants a mile and a quarter with a six furlong workout. Crow is running in a 7.5 furlong race which is right up his alley. Bella Luna needs a little stamina for her nine furlong race, hence the length. Both of them will do well with this type of workout. Maggie couldn't help but agree with Brooks and Ripley. The horses were built to last and built to run. The workout plan brought out the best of both worlds. The pair of riders nodded to each other, patted their horses' necks and refocused on the winding turf track. Crow and Lulu flattened their ears at one another, warning each other off. Brooks was impressed with the fire burning out of Lulu's eyes at Crow. She used to take aggression calmly, but that appeared to have changed over her vacation. Brooks smugly thought that her fire had been found due to Mastermind's continued annoyance over the past two months.
Maggie patted Crow's dark neck and loosened the reins. The elegant colt instantly bounded up the hillside, body moving quickly over his lean legs. Crow wasted no energy in any way whatsoever. The horse did everything to the fullest, especially running. He raced with his neck stretched out, his legs accompanying his lean, long body. He was glorious in his movement. Maggie looked over at Bella Luna and was impressed with the near white filly. Her eyes were rimmed with red as they swept over Crow. She looked stunning and muscular, a true fairytale horse. She raced with her head and tail low as well and with her ears flat to her head. She had been second string behind Cross My Heart in every workout prior to her happy vacation. Now she was annoyed and well beyond her form compliant self.
Brooks barely moved on his dramatic filly. She wanted to blitz GS Royal Crown. He could feel it burning in her body. She was ready to do some severe damage. However, he held her in and close. She was used to running shorter distances and surprisingly, Witch Creek had done a pretty good job keeping her to those shorter distances. Now it was time to stretch out and see what she was made of the second half of the season. Bella Luna was a stamina filly. He would prove it to Ripley and everyone else at the track. She may be the underdog at the current point in racing and she also surely had been forgotten. That was one of the blessings that occurred with Bella Luna. She wasn't a Mastermind type animal who was never out of mind. It allowed her time to grow.
The colt and filly darted over the hills, Lulu's more muscled frame beat out GS Royal Crown's nine times out of ten. She was a different horse these days. She was on the muscle and pulling the bit right out of Brooks' hands. He pulled back, reminding her who was boss. She tossed her head violently, squealed when Crow moved to the lead. Maggie snickered at Lulu and Brooks. There was trouble in paradise it seemed. The near white filly and the boy eventually managed to settle down, but they'd basically given up the lead. Crow's steely body was now a length in front, his legs pumping enthusiastically. Maggie relished in the wild speed that Crow possessed. He wasn't a contained animal. Everyone knew Crow could instantly hit the bullet button and be gone. He really had an incredible turn of foot and he would use it on Lulu today. Maggie glanced again at Brooks, who was watching her with narrowed blue jean colored eyes.
Maggie stuck her tongue out and let out more rein on Crow. He settled into his nice long stride, though his pounding blood threatened speed, as did his listening ears. Brooks also let Lulu settle down. The white filly had long settled back into the routine. She'd just forgotten how they did things around here and Brooks was more than forgiving towards his usually gentle Sea Struck filly. The mile and a quarter was cruising right on by and the horses were becoming limbered up and incredible feeling. There was no doubt the six furlong workout would be intense.
GS Royal Crown leaped up the hillside, Maggie crouched well within his gray mane. The colt was full of himself today. His next start would come in the Remson Stakes at The Wire. He was more than ready to run to that victory, more than capable of it as well. Maggie did not wait for Lulu to catch up to them at the hillside. She wanted her colt to run now. She held him in down the hillside, letting him run into the usual three furlong flat stretch. Crow knew what was coming and at the base of the hill, practically slid, begging for more rein.
Brooks knew what Maggie was about. Bella Luna did too. The white filly surged forward within the same second that Crow took off. Her muscled body did not creak with disuse. Bella Luna instantly was in full running gear and going after a colt who was already verging on grade four. She was at his hip before Maggie even realized her precious boy had competition today. Crow flattened his ears, but Maggie steadied him before he felt obliged to kick in to second gear. Brooks did not pump Lulu for any more than what she was giving him. The silver-gray filly was well in control. A total different animal from the one that had gone on vacation. Her mind had caught up with her physical maturity and possibly beyond that as well. She was calm and collected, eager to please and she was eager to place the right amount of pressure on her workmate.
The pair cranked through the first three furlongs like well-oiled machines, their positions unchanged. They remained on the same leads, matched strides, but Lulu was still 3/4s beyond her stable mate. She could run up to join him on the lead at anytime. Only she didn't want to. Her ears flopped atop her head, her dark eyes blazed. She was listening and well behaved. Brooks smirked as they moved into the fourth furlong, the speed clip increasing increment by increment. She suddenly decided it was time to move. And Brooks let her.
The gray filly hurtled forward, body brushing the running Crow. She now ran nose to nose with him, head bobbing and looking quite fierce. Crow matched strides now. The steel gray colt giving her not all of his efforts. GS Royal Crown had developed an ego and he was not about to let the silver filly dismantle it in a mere workout. They swept over the next three furlongs with Lulu pushing and pressing on Crow and him giving it right back to her, ears flat and eyes blazing. The workout took on a different atmosphere. It was no longer playful, but mean and vicious. Both horses wanted to become royalty and wanted to beat each other out for it. Lulu hit the end of the workout a nose in front, her gaze fierce as ever. Crow squealed and then bolted, nearly dropping Maggie. He was not to be outdone. They both would not be outdone in their next official starts as two year olds.
