personality
The Devil's first foal so far has been a success. She has the gentle eyes and attitude of her talented sire and the thick chest and powerful legs of her dam. Ripley is in love with the stout Hourglass even after a year. She chases Ripley from paddock to paddock, nickering constantly when the woman moved into the barn. Because of her near attack by The Devil's Touch, the filly has remained independent and has become a willing partner to Ripley.
The filly is extremely playful and is quite a flashy horse. Ripley expects her to catch the eye when she is fully grown, just as The Devil did when she was roaring down the track.
Hourglass sure has shown an affinity for the grass. Ripley as ponied her alongside The Devil's Touch on numerous occasions since her first year. Ripley can't wait to unveil her possible champion. Ripley has given Brooks full control of the filly's early training as he has demonstrated his capabilities with working with turf horses from the get go. The first daughter of The Devil Touch's was thought to be this perfectly willing creature both on the ground and in the saddle. However, that has proven not to be the case. A touch of her dam has apparently wriggled its way into the filly after all besides her appearance. Gentle on the ground, Hourglass is anything but when being ridden. The first time she was mounted, Hourglass took off like a freight train with no regard or well-wishes for her rider. She is impulsive and wickedly fast, a fine trait passed down by both her parents. The problem is that she hates having a rider on her back. She completely does a 360 turn when she has a rider on. Her eyes glow with hate and she'll buck and buck and buck. She loves to race and loves to run, but the human part absolutely disgusts her. Brooks has learned that he must let Hourglass have her own way on the track, from warmup to cool down. The only way to get this filly blowing her hot air out on the track and blowing the competition away is for the rider to go on autopilot. She is a willing partner and will accept flicks of the rein, but hand riding absolutely makes her go crazy. She is good in the gate, pondering of ways to get her rider off and will break extraordinarily well. She is very tactical in that she watches the other horses and plots her next move. She'll accept a little direction, but her own speed is all her own and she will use it when and where she chooses. The Devil's Hourglass is quite a conundrum and more of her dam than first meets the eye. Witch Creek's hope is that this raw talent will make just as big a splash out on the racetrack the second time around.
