"Fractious doesn't even begin to cover this colt. If we're not careful with him, we could end up with a colicy horse on our hands--every farm owner's worst nightmare. Malcolm says we can get him to relax with all of the outside time, exercise and jolly balls. I suppose I can see a difference, but I have to hope that he'll develop like Taboo did. The older she got, the less nerves and neurotic tendencies we had to deal with. There's no denying he's special and thank goodness we don't have to deal with any problems when he's running. In that aspect, at least, he's a saint."

Born on a thunderous night, Usurper's entry into the world was a restless and wild one. The setting of his birth has seemingly set the tone for his life as he is neither simple nor gentle. A complicated creature, Usurper needed a lot of coaxing to even start training. Willful and defiant, Malcolm had to battle with the colt's iron will to get through to his brain. Usurper is a nervous type who needs someone to keep him entertained at all times. He has several jolly balls hanging around his stall and a cup of pepper paste set outside his door on a little side tray to paint on the damaged boards that form his home. He must have been a beaver in his past life for all of the wood chewing and tearing he does. The horse gets hand walked more than any other horse on the roster and is out in the dry paddock for more time than he is in his stall.
He's a hot tamale from the time he exits his stall until the time he returns from the track. He prances and dances, seeing everything and comprehending nothing so hyper is he. At the three major racetracks, Usurper's most important gear is the thickest cotton to block out the sounds as the sights are bad enough for Usurper. Once he gets through the hoopla of the sport, Usurper does calm down on the track. He's not a very poised animal, but he is great mover. Thanks to his perfectly shaped legs, Usurper has the smoothest gallop imaginable. He does everything effortlessly and seems to lull himself into a relaxed state for racing. He isn't a fan of the gate, but he will go in if poked enough by the gate crew. He breaks well from the gate, but it takes him a few strides to get his long legs under him. With bounding strides, the colt will overtake the better breakers and assume the lead or second. He's not a need the lead type, but he is best comfortable running free without much conflict. He doesn't mind being on the rail or on the outside, as long as he has clear running room. Usurper will kick on at the final turn, legs stretching to impressive lengths as he puts distance between himself and his pursuers. He loves a challenge and if other horses come to him in the stretch, Usurper will buckle down and fight to the finish, showing flashes of his dam's raw determination.
