personality
If there was a list of horses at Witch Creek for being mentally tough, Vagabond would be near the top. The blood bay colt is the stoniest horse, watchful and calculating in every single circumstance. Bond, as he has been nicknamed, will get into trouble and then get out of trouble before you even think about yelling at him. He is visually one of the most impressive horses to come into Witch Creek and is always on the muscles. He is strong and full of energy, carrying a different presence than most young horses. There is no sense of goofiiness to this long legged, physically impressive creature. He is all business, all the time. Feeding time might as well be a shark frenzy in the ocean. Saddling time he'll stand alert and still as a stone, practically hurrying the human to keep up the fast pace. He doesn't play around and is definitely not a crowd-pleaser. He has a job, knows the job description backwards and forwards and will not extend himself beyond it. The job says to gate nicely, run fast and win. Bond does exactly what is necessary.
On the way to the track, the colt will puff himself up to a maximum physique, strutting and bowing, pep-talking himself and the jockey. Maggie was the chosen one for this job, familiar with the mental hard-cases of Witch Creek. She has said more than once its like being on the back of Michael Jordan when Vagabond steps out onto the track. He'll warm up like a dream, ears pricking and adrenaline flowing while the other horses cause all sorts of drama. The minute the colt is in the gate, he'll go still again, ears pricked as though he is patiently waiting for the gate to burst open. The blood bay colt will break slowly due to this maximum stillness, but will muscle his way up to a length behind the last horse. He cruises along, giving all the right signals, playing with his ears and flexing the muscles. It is at the end of the backstretch that this one needs his cue, needs to be ridden hard until the very end. Vagabond is a team-player and needs a team-mate capable of putting in just as much effort. The pair will chip away at every individual in the field, running toward the head of the field, usually swinging wide on the turn. Then with a couple thrown crosses, Vagaband will see daylight and then just blitz away from the field. And if there's a fight, well, Vagabond will stick it to that rival until they go down with a whimper and a white flag of surrender.
