Personality
"No one was certain what kind of filly would result from the combination of The Unicorn and The Devil's Hourglass. Her grand-dam was a notoriously bad mom, often attacking her foals until the last gave her a taste of her own medicine. Her dam was a sweetheart until someone dared to put a saddle on her back and ask her to move her feet. Her great-grandsire Touch Up was a menacing powerhouse, too fiery to control on a track with only one win at the age of four then never better than third at five. All of these factors should have swayed me to stay away from a brawler, but The Unicorn enticed, the old ARS lines pulled me in and the result was Fallen Angel--the first great descendant of Battle Brook's legendary cornerstone."
- from Ripley's personal journal
The fourth generation never looked so beautiful. Long legged, ultra intelligent, and perfect, Fallen Angel reminded Ripley of Calamity Queen. Like CQ, she just had that "it" factor and like that original daughter of Touch Up, she was among the most beautiful foals descended from that sire line. However, beautiful is as beautiful does and Fallen Angel was a witch. She would charge her stall bars just to scare off visitors, clacking her teeth against them sending echoes down the barn hall. She'd circle her stall like a shark with her ears pinned flat to her neck and her head lowered. Outside of her stall, Angel was the type to need a chain--something rarely done at BBS--brought on by her attempted attack of Malcolm Floyd when she was a yearling.
On the track, Angel is a rough-handling filly. She bucks and bolts and requires the presence of Cold Mountain--the biggest gelding owned by the stable--until she returns to her stall. When she actually runs straight, the filly is smooth as glass and dizzyingly fast. She breaks like a shot, often running with nose tipped up in the air, fighting the bit hard until other runners outfoot her. The initial hundred yards of the race are tough on Angel's jockey, but once she's in hand, she's very good. Her jockey can place her anywhere without fear that she'll get nervous and back out of the race. She loves the thrum of battle and that is what racing is to her. She'll track her competitors until the far turn where she'll make a blitzing move to go from the middle of the pack to the front. If Angel can get away with running away from the field, she will. She loves to flash her domination, taking great pleasure in something where lack of control means freedom.
